In 1854 Aaron Dennison and Edward Howard built their American Waltham watch company factory in Waltham, on the banks of the Charles River. The American Waltham Watch Company pioneered the method of mass production with interchangeable parts and in over 100 years, assembled its precision movements in more than 40 million watches. Waltham grew to worldwide renown and, with its ability to offer affordability, quality and perfection, helped shape the future of the America’s manufacturing success (Henry Ford’s visit to the factory inspired his use of the assembly line in automobile manufacturing).
In its heyday, the 150-year old Massachusetts-based manufacturer produced more than one million timepieces a year, most of which were worn on the end of a chain and not on the wrist. Notable owners include the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Nikola Tesla and Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, all of whom one could easily envision casually pulling out their Waltham watch from their vest pocket to check the time.
After numerous corporate machinations, Waltham ultimately became a Swiss manufacturer owned by an American and now offers a full line of contemporary, stylish models.
